How To Troubleshoot Outgoing Messages?

Postby v.thompson » Sat May 02, 2015 8:37 pm

I just set up ActiveSync on my server. I am getting the green light on my settings and have an SSL certificate for the domain. I connected fine as far as my Inbox goes, but I am unable to send messages. I just get a generic notice that the action failed. My SMTP logs do not show any activity. I did turn on logging in the advanced tab of the activesync management tool but so far no logs have been created. I did not apply a filter, but that is now my next step, on the folder outbox.

If there are other steps I should be taking please inform me.

Hi,

Firstly review the following article and ensure you have the logging for EAS enabled correctly: https://www.mailenable.com/kb/content/article.asp?ID=me020611. Once you see the log files being created you will need to look for the request for "SendMail" using the log analyser mentioned in the article.

Example:

Code: Select all

- <SendMail>
- <ClientId>
- <![CDATA[ {194C9711-008C-4C20-92FC-3810B86BFDCA}
 ]]>
 </ClientId>
 <SaveInSentItems />
- <MIME>

Here is what I get, but still unable to send the message.

What other steps can I take to troubleshoot?

Hi,

Ok do you see the SMTP transaction within the SMTP connectors log file for the same date/time? Search for the <**************@gmail.com> address in the SMTP activity. Look for the SMTP-OU lines and then post up the results. Also look in the SMTP debug log file for the associated logging for the transaction and any errors that maybe occurring during the transaction with the Gmail server.

There are no mentions in the SMTP log.

I went looking through the files in my webmail, and all of my testing outgoing messages are in the folder "Sent Items". It's as if the messages are just dropping into the Sent Items box without stopping at the outbox.

I have switched clients to see if there is any change. I was using the built in activesync client, now trying Microsoft's Outlook. The only difference is it doesn't tell me that the message wasn't sent.

I haven't heard any other ideas but I have noticed another bit of activity. The Application Pool for MailEnable Protocols will shut off. This is on a Windows 2003 Server with IIS6.

I can restart the Pool and all seems good with the testing tools. Are there settings I can change to make it more resilient?

HI,

If the application pool is in a stopped state then inspect the Windows event log for errors why the application shutdown. One thing that springs to mind is if you are running the MailEnableEASPool under the Microsoft 2.0 .NET Framework. We have seen can be problematic and therefore is suggested to run the application pool under 4.0.

It might even be a better idea lodging a support ticket via MailEnable support and providing server access so we can inspect the problem in more detail.
